Beacon Hill

One of Seattle's first neighborhoods, Beacon Hill was homesteaded in the 1860's. It features a number of parks. Best known is Jefferson Park, with its poplars and 18-hole and nine-hole golf courses, driving range, clubhouse and lawn bowling area. Close to 100,000 golfers per year visit the Jefferson Park Golf Course.

At the north end of Beacon Hill's Jefferson Park Golf Course, you'll also find the Jefferson Community Center. This center features both traditional and nontraditional classes, including foreign languages, and ethnic arts and crafts.

The South Seattle area above the Rainier Valley is culturally-diverse, with Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans, African-Americans, Samoans, and Caucasians all part of the community. You can see the ethnic diversity reflected in the local Beacon Hill Public Library, where you will find books in languages from around the world. At the Library, there is also an emphasis on supporting the community's children, with after-school programs and storytimes.
